Today’s Word: encourage

☆  encourage  励ます

============================

If you encourage someone, you give them confidence. You can encourage them by letting them know that they are doing a good job and tell them not to give up. For example, my father always encouraged me to be whatever I wanted to be.

You can also encourage someone to do something, which is a little different – it means that you are trying to persuade them to do something. Naturally, you are encouraging to do something that you think would be good for them: such as encouraging someone to apply for a job, or to eat more vegetables, or to join a sports team. You are still giving them confidence, but in this case, they are not doing anything yet, but you think they should have confidence and “just do it.”

Did anyone encourage you to study English or is it a personal choice for you?
