A competitive person is someone who wants to be more successful than others and hates to lose. A word with a similar meaning is “ambitious.” If you say that someone is “ambitious” (in other words someone who wants to be successful) you are describing them in a positive way.
However, if you describe someone as competitive, it is rarely a positive thing. The difference between being ambitious and being competitive is that the competitive person is basically wanting to be better than others rather than be better than themselves. I think I used to be competitive when I was young, but hopefully now people would describe me as ambitious instead. I hope so! How about you, which are you?
