☆ essence 本質
The “essence” of something is the fundamental nature or core of that thing. It is the real and invariable nature of something. For example, “Freedom is the essence of democracy.”
There are two idioms using “essence”. “In essence” meaning “essentially” or “basically”. For example, “He comes across as loud and aggressive, but in essence he is a shy person.”
The second idiom is “of the essence” which means “crucial” or “essential.” For example, “The project is due next Friday, speed is of the essence.” Or a commonly used phrase, “Time is of the essence.”
Have you ever heard either of these idioms using “essence”?
