The word powerful can be used in a few different ways. Firstly, it can mean someone is able to control or influence people and events.
“He is a powerful man and people listen to him.” (similar meaning: influential)
Secondly, it can mean that someone is physically strong.
“He flexed his powerful muscles” (similar meaning: strong)
“My neighbor has a big powerful dog.”
A powerful smell is very strong.
“There was a powerful smell of stale beer in the park.” (This meaning reminds of Inokashira park during cherry blossom season! When I walked my dogs in the park in the early morning, I could smell so much beer after the hanami parties!!)
A powerful voice is loud and can be heard from far away.
“We could hear his powerful voice from the other side of the room.” (similar meaning: loud)
