============================
I’m sure you already know what a “rule” is, right? We can use it in a few different ways, and again in some different phrases, so let’s take a look at them.
Rules are instructions that tell you what you are allowed to do and what you are not allowed to do.
Here is a booklet explaining the rules of baseball.
Smoking is against the rules.
There will be an amendment to Rule 31.
A rule is a statement that tells people what to do in order to achieve success of some kind.
An important rule for good health is to drink 8 glasses of water every day.
There are five golden rules for goal setting success.
Of course you know that we can also talk about grammar rules! And science rules. These “rules” are the statements which describe the way things usually happen in a particular situation.
One rule of English is that adjectives usually come before the noun they are modifying.
And if you say that something is “the rule” then that is the normal state or situation. For example, “working on weekends has become the rule rather than the exception.”
Do you know any other ways to use the word “rule”?
Bye,
Chris
