My friend was talking about “tribal beliefs” last week. “Tribal beliefs” are
the beliefs held by a group of people. This could be a small community, a
state, or an entire country.

A common tribal belief that I find in Japan, is “Japanese people can’t
speak English.” Maybe no one ever said this to you, but it might be part
of your beliefs without you realizing. You might not think it’s true, but if it is
is part of the culture that you grew up in, then it might be affecting you and
your English improvement. It’s important to take time to examine the beliefs
you have about something, to decide if it really is your belief, or if it is a “tribal
belief.” If it is a tribal belief, there might not be any reason for you to believe it…

先週、私の友人が“部族的信念”について話していました。
これは、グループの人々が持っている信念ということです。
グループは、小さな地域社会でも、国家でも、国そのものという場合もあります。

私が日本で発見した共通の部族的信念は、“日本人は英語が話せない”ということです。
このようなことを言われたことはないかもしれませんが、知らないうちに信念となっているようです。
信じられないかもしれませんが、このような文化で育ったために、あなた自身、そしてあなたの英語の上達に影響を与えているといえるでしょう。
自分の持っている信念を見つめなおし、それが本当にあなたの信念なのか、それとも“部族的信念”なのかを考えることは重要です。
それが部族的信念であるならば、あなたが信じる理由はないですからね。
