You might be familiar with the translation of today’s word as
“impressive” rather than “effective” but it can sometimes be used
in this way.

For example, I would say that Japan is very effective at incorporating
other countries’ customs into Japanese culture. For example, when I first
arrived in Japan in 1996 Christmas was only celebrated a little bit, and
Halloween was not popular at all.

Now, Christmas is very big in Tokyo! And so is Halloween! In Australia,
I have never celebrated Halloween, and yet in Japan, at the end of October
I can see pumpkins and decorations everywhere!! I don’t know why – or
how – Japan is able to do it, but it is very effective at incorporating other
cultures!!

今日の単語は、“impressive”という単語の方が知られているでしょう。
しかし、今日のような使い方もあるのです。

例えば、日本は、外国の風習を日本の文化に取り入れることに長けていると思います。
例えば、私が初めて日本に来た1996年のクリスマスは、少しお祝をする程度ですし、ハロウィーンに至っては全く知られていませんでした。

今、クリスマスは大きなイベントですよね！
そしてハロウィーンも！
オーストラリアでハロウィーンを祝ったことはありませんが、日本では10月も末に近づくと、どこでもカボチャやハロウィーンの飾り付けを目にしますね。
なぜか、そしてまたどのようにかは分かりませんが、日本はこういった事が可能で、他の文化を取り入れるのにとても有効だといえるでしょう。
