The word “norm” is basically a shortening of the
word “normal”. And it is used when you are talking
about the standard or whatever is considered normal
in that situation. The word is most often used when
talking about “social norms” and “cultural norms” which
are “laws” that tell people how to behave, but are not
actually legally laws. If you don’t follow these norms,
then you might be considered strange, but the police can’t
arrest you!

When you get into an elevator, do you turn around and face
the front of the elevator? Or do you stay standing facing
the back of the elevator. Turning to face the front of the
elevator is an example of a common social norm. In America,
the social norm is to tip waiters at a cafe. Another social
norm is to put litter into a trash can. What are some social
norms in Japan?

ものごとの標準や、その状況において常識と思われていることを指します。
この言葉は、“社会規範”や、“文化基準”など、どのように行動するか、振る舞うかということに関する“決まり”(もちろん、法的な決まりではありません)などによく使う言葉でしょう。
これらの基準に従わないと、警察に捕まることはありませんが、変わった人と思われてしまうかもしれませんよ。

エレベーターに乗った時に、ドアの方に向き直りますか？
それとも、向きを変えずに、そのままドアを背にしたまま立っていますか？
ドアの方に向きを変える、というのが社会規範の例です。
アメリカでは、カフェのウェイターにチップを渡すことが社会規範です。
他にも、ごみはごみ箱に捨てる、などというのも基準のひとつです。
日本では、どのような社会規範がありますか？
