When we conclude something, we make a decision that something is
true, based on the facts we know. There is another word, similar in
meaning, “assume” and this is what we do when we “conclude” something
without actually knowing or checking that the facts are right…

So, there is a famous saying, “If you assume something, it makes an ‘ass’
out of ‘u’ and ‘me’”… In this case, they have broken the word down into
“ass” – an idiot, and “u” (you) and “me”. If we assume something, “you” and
“me” will be idiots!

As you can see, it’s much better to conclude something on facts that you
know to be true, than to “assume” without checking the facts!

何かを結論づけるということは、我々が知る事実に基づいて、そのことが真実であると判断することです。
同じような意味で“assume(～と推測する)”という言葉がありますが、真実を確認せずに結論づけるような時に使います。

“If you assume something, it makes an ass out of “u” and “me””という有名なフレーズがあります。
これは、“assume”という言葉を“ass”と“u(=you)”と“me”に分けています。
思い込みで決めつけると、“you”も“me”もばかを見る、ということです。

この通り、ものごとを結論づける時には、思い込みで決めつけるのではなく、事実に基づくことが大事です。
