To be honest, I don’t use “pleasant” very much. It feels like a
word that “old” people would use. Like my grandmother for
example. Ha ha. Here’s an example of what she would say: I live
in a pleasant little apartment. In this case, I would say, “cozy” or
“charming” or “nice” little apartment.

Are there words in Japanese that only older (or younger)
people use? How do Japanese language learner’s know if a word is
used regularly by everyone? With English, you can usually check
the dictionary, and the example sentences should give you a hint as
to whether it is used regularly or not.

正直に言えば、「pleasant　(心地いい)」はあまり使わない言葉です。
年配の人が使う言葉のように感じるからです。
例えば、私のおばあちゃんくらいの人ですね！(笑)

その年代の人は、「I live in a pleasant apartment　(私は心地の良いアパートに住んでいる)」などという言い方をしますが、この場合、私だったら「pleasant　（心地いい）」の代わりに　「cozy　(くつろげる)」とか「charming　(魅力的な)」、「nice　(良い)」などと言うでしょう。

日本語にも、年配の人が(あるいは若者が)使う言葉はありますか？
日本語を学ぶ外国人は、その言葉が、誰もが普通に使う言葉かどうかをどのように判断したらよいのでしょう？

英語は、大抵は辞書に載っている例文が、普段使う言葉かどうかのヒントになるはずです。
