Understanding jokes in a foreign language can be very
difficult. A lot of the time, the joke is difficult to understand
not because of the language barrier but because of the cultural
differences.

Westerners often say a joke, but what they said is only funny
if you know the background; for example, it might be connected
to a TV show, a famous person, an event or even a popular
book.

In fact, the same thing happens to me when my friends are joking
in Japanese. I usually laugh even if I don’t understand the joke…
it’s frustrating not understanding the joke, but in the end, I remind
myself that it’s just a joke, and if it were really important (or funny!)
they’d explain it to me.

What do you do when you don’t understand a joke in English?

外国語のジョークを理解するのは、とても難しいですね。
ジョークを理解するのが難しいほとんどの場面では、言語の問題よりも文化の違いが原因です。

西洋人はよくジョークを言いますが、そのバックグラウンドを知らなければ面白くない場合が多いようです。
例えば、テレビ番組や有名人、イベントや人気のある本などと関連しています。

実際に、私の友達が日本語で冗談を言う場合に、同じ問題が起こります。
私は分からなくても、だいたい笑っています。
もちろんジョークが分からないのは不満ですが、結局ただの冗談ですし、もし本当に大事だったら（または、面白かったら！）説明してくれるはず、と自分に言い聞かせています。

英語のジョークが分からない時、あなたはどうしていますか？
