Yesterday I mentioned the word, epidural, which is
pain relief during labor. In western culture, the
epidural is very common, in fact, it’s unusual NOT
to have it. Whereas in Japan, it’s much harder to find
a hospital that will give you one.

One more difference is that usually the mother goes
home the next day after giving birth at a hopsital
in Australia or the US. In Japan, you get to stay
for about 5 days, with yummy food! I think I like
the Japanese style. Good food and some relaxation
time makes up for no pain relief. 🙂

昨日は、epidural（硬膜外麻酔）という単語の話をしましたね。
これは出産用の麻酔です。
西洋文化では硬膜外麻酔は一般的で、実は使わない方が珍しいのです。
日本では、逆に硬膜外麻酔をしてくれる病院は珍しいですね。
(注：いわゆる無痛分娩です)

もう１つの大きな違いは、アメリカやオーストラリアでは出産して次の日に退院します！
日本ではだいたい５日間くらい入院してから、総合病院やクリニックから退院しますね。
５日間のリラックスできる時間とおいしい食事があるなら、硬膜外麻酔は無くてもいいかな？（笑）
