This is a word that many students make a mistake
with. It’s easy to confuse which tense to use
when we talk about “catching” some kind of disease.
For example, even though I have a cold now, we always
say talk about it using past tense.

Here are some examples:

I have a cold.
I caught a cold last weekend.
I caught it from my co-worker.
I catch a cold every time I visit Hokkaido.
Come inside now! You’re going to catch a cold!

これは多くの生徒さんがミスしてしまう単語です。
病気に感染していると語るとき、どの時制を使えばいいのか混乱しやすいのです。
例えば、いま風邪をひいている、と言いたい場合には過去形を使うのが普通です。

例文を見てみましょう：

I have a cold.　
風邪をひいている。

I caught a cold last weekend.
週末に、風邪をひいた（感染した）。

I caught it from my co-worker.　
同僚からうつった（感染した）。

I catch a cold every time I visit Hokkaido.　
北海道に行くと毎回風邪をひくよ。

Come inside now! You’re going to catch a cold!　
家に入りなさい!風邪をひくわよ！
