There are three words to describe very similiar
patterns on clothes: checked, tartan, and plaid.
Western people often confuse these words!

Checked is usually squares of different colors,
usually black and white, but any color is OK.

Tartan is a criss cross pattern in multiple colors,
that originated in Scotland to represent different
clans.

Plaid is often used to mean the same as Tartan, but
it is not the same, because it doesn’t represent any
clan. So it is more like, a “tartan-inspired” pattern.

とても似ている洋服の柄を説明する３つの単語があります。
「チェックの」、「タータンの（格子縞の）」、「プラッド（格子縞の）」。
西洋人はこの単語をよく間違えます。

「チェック」は四角いパターンで、主に白と黒だけです。
他の色ももちろんOKですが。

「タータン」は十字のパターンで、いろいろな色を使い、元々はスコットランドの氏族ごとの違いを表すのが由来です。

「プラッド」は主にタータンと同じ意味で使われますが、プラッドは氏族を示さないところが、タータンとは違います。
つまり、プラッドはタータンにインスパイアされたパターンですね。
