“Nice weather we’re having.” Weather is the most
common topic in English for making small talk. If you’re
waiting in line for something, and you want to start a
conversation with someone, then small talk about
the weather, or how long you have to wait are good topics.
If you’re at a party and need to make small talk with
strangers, then topics like work, or hobby, or how that
person knows the host of the party are good topics.
