You can use today’s word to talk about gathering
things, people and even information. Here are some
examples:

She gathered her things and got ready to leave.

We gathered around the table to discuss the matter.

The police used a telephone bug to gather information.

And there is also a phrase that we commonly use to talk
about information that you have found out: “From what I
can gather…”
E.g. From what I can gather, he is planning on going home
next week.
