Today’s Word: sustain

☆  sustain  維持する

============================

Sustain means to continue or maintain something for a period of time. Similar words are maintain, continue, keep up, and prolong. I saw an interesting infographic the other day, about how long life could be sustained on the various planets in our universe. The example was about how long life could be sustained without a spacesuit (oxygen) on various planets. Unfortunately, the answer for most of the planets – except for earth – was less than one second. Mercury and Mars were around 2 minutes.

Life on earth, without a spacesuit, can be sustained for around 80 years (or more in Okinawa!!) These days, though, I wonder if our earth will be around that long. In Australia, our population is increasing, and the amount of trash that we create each day is just too much. We cannot sustain this growth in population and in our trash creation. As a country, we do a pretty good job of recycling, but it’s not enough. Unfortunately, I don’t have any ideas on how to fix such a huge problem, but I try to do my best with my family to create less waste.
